Horse welfare, in numbers

  • Fifteen horses, born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
  • Veterinary check-ups three times a year.
  • Six to twelve weeks of pasture vacation a year. The city requires no less than five weeks of vacation or furlough every twelve months.
  • We do not operate below 19°F or above an 87°F heat index — our own limits. The city sends horses back to the stable at 90°F and above, at 80°F and above when the Equine Heat Index reaches 150, and at 18°F and below.
  • The operation is licensed and inspected by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The city figures above are published by NYC Health: caring for horses working in NYC. Our own limits are stricter than the rules require; see our horses.

Founder

NYC Royal Carriage was founded in 1999 by Joseph, who still runs it with his family; the fuller account is on our About page. For publication we can supply his full name, a photograph and a quote on request — we have deliberately not printed a surname or a portrait here that we have not cleared with him first. Email us and we will send them.
